Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott completed her studies at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching in Temple University. She hoped to become the high school's English teacher. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher was cut short. She started her career singing live poetry and performing the work of her own. In the end, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. Then, during Roots' show she showed herself as an artist. Following that, she started collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was able to perform through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
